Read-a-thon – Choose the Read-a-thon theme, coordinate the opening and closing programs, track students reading & determine prizes.
  • Time frame: Planning begins over the Summer; program usually runs through the month of September.
  • Committee Chair or Co-Chairs responsibilities:  Choose the theme, coordinate dates for kick-off, end of Read-a-thon and Awards Assembly, communicate with school administration & teachers, and organize planning meetings with committee members.  The Chair person needs to be available in the evenings for planning meetings and sporadically during the school days of the event.
  • Committee Member opportunities to help: There are 3-4 committee meetings to determine theme, dates, and who is doing what.  Opportunities include: minute counters during the event (starts at 8am and any amount of time people can help is wonderful), making posters, decorating the media center window, writing a skit to get the students excited about reading, purchasing supplies for students (i.e. folders, stickers), designing read-a-thon forms, and deciding and purchasing prizes. (costs for supplies/prizes will be reimbursed with pre-approval of PTSA).
